You’re ready to try Claude Code, but the pricing page is confusing. There are multiple plans, two different billing systems, and no clear “just tell me what to pay” answer. This article fixes that.
By the end you’ll know exactly which plan fits your situation — and why.
This is part of our complete Claude Code Beginner’s Guide.
TL;DR
- The free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code — you need a paid plan
- Pro ($20/month)** is the starting point — good for occasional use and smaller projects
- Max ($100/month)** is for daily use on larger codebases
- Max ($200/month)** is for heavy, all-day coding sessions
- API billing** is a separate system for developers who want pay-as-you-go or programmatic access
- You can’t get Claude Code for free — but you only need one subscription to use both Claude.ai and Claude Code
The Two Ways to Pay for Claude Code
Before looking at specific plans, understand that Claude Code has two completely separate billing systems. Getting this wrong is the most common source of confusion.
Path 1: Subscription plans. You pay a flat monthly fee (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) and get Claude Code included with a certain usage allowance. This is how most individuals use it.
Path 2: API billing. You pay per token (per chunk of text processed) through Anthropic’s developer platform (called the Console). This is for developers building applications or running automated workflows.
You don’t need both. Most people use one or the other. Start with a subscription plan unless you have a specific reason to need the API.
Plan 1: Free — Does Not Include Claude Code
Anthropic’s free tier lets you use Claude.ai in the browser for writing, research, and general questions. It’s genuinely useful for a lot of things.
But it does not include Claude Code. If you try to install Claude Code and log in with a free account, authentication will fail.
Who it’s for: People who want to use Claude for non-coding tasks and aren’t interested in Claude Code.
Plan 2: Pro — $20/Month
The Pro plan is the entry point for Claude Code. At $20/month (or $17/month billed annually), it includes:
- Claude.ai access across web, desktop, and mobile
- Claude Code access in your terminal and IDE
- Usage limits that Anthropic describes as suitable for “short coding sprints in small codebases”
What does “usage limits” mean in practice? Anthropic doesn’t publish a fixed token quota. Your limits depend on message length, codebase size, conversation length, which Claude model you’re using, and current server load. Think of it as a rate limit rather than a hard cap — you can work for a while, hit a pause, wait for the limit to reset (typically around 5 hours), and continue.
Who it’s for: Developers who code with Claude Code a few hours a week, students, and anyone trying it out for the first time. If you’re just getting started, Pro is the right starting point.
💡 Pro Tip: Anthropic’s own data from early 2026 showed the average developer spends about $6/day on Claude Code via API. At $20/month flat, the Pro subscription is excellent value if you’re using it regularly but not all day.
Plan 3: Max — $100/Month
The Max plan at $100/month (sometimes called “Max 5x”) gives you roughly five times the usage of Pro. Anthropic describes it as “great value for everyday use in larger codebases.”
This plan makes sense when:
- You’re hitting Pro’s rate limits regularly and the 5-hour resets interrupt your work
- You’re working in large codebases where Claude Code needs to read and process a lot of files
- You’re coding daily, not just a few hours a week
Like Pro, it includes both Claude.ai and Claude Code under a single subscription.
Who it’s for: Full-time developers and engineers who rely on Claude Code as a core part of their daily workflow.
Plan 4: Max — $200/Month
The Max plan at $200/month (sometimes called “Max 20x”) gives you roughly 20 times the usage of Pro. Anthropic describes it as “great value for power users with the most access to Claude models.”
This is for people who are coding heavily all day, running long sessions in very large codebases, or whose time is expensive enough that rate limit interruptions are a real cost.
Who it’s for: Senior engineers, contractors, and anyone where Claude Code has become an essential daily tool and rate limits at $100 are still a problem.
Plan 5: Team and Enterprise
Team plans offer Claude Code access for groups, with additional controls for administration, security, and billing management. Pricing is per seat and available at anthropic.com.
Enterprise plans are custom-priced for organizations that need SSO, compliance features, audit logging, and dedicated support.
If you’re an individual, you don’t need these.
Plan 6: API Billing (Pay-Per-Token)
The API (Application Programming Interface) is how developers access Claude programmatically — meaning through code, not through a chat interface. When you use the API, you’re charged per token rather than a flat monthly fee.
A token is roughly 3–4 characters of text. Every message you send and every response you receive costs tokens. API pricing for Claude Sonnet 4.6 is currently $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens (introductory pricing was lower through August 2026).
When does API billing make sense for Claude Code?
- You’re running Claude Code in automated pipelines or CI/CD (continuous integration/deployment)
- You want fine-grained cost control and can predict usage
- You’re building a product on top of Claude Code
- You need to separate Claude Code costs from Claude.ai costs precisely
When does it not make sense?
- You’re an individual developer doing normal coding work — subscriptions are simpler and often cheaper
- You’re just starting out — the API requires setting up a Console account and API keys
⚠️ Warning: API billing and subscription billing are separate accounts. If you pay for a Pro subscription, that doesn’t give you API tokens, and vice versa. Don’t set up both unless you specifically need both.
Which Plan Should You Choose?
Here’s the honest answer based on your situation:
Just getting started with Claude Code → Start with Pro ($20/month). If you hit rate limits often after a few weeks of real use, upgrade to Max.
Full-time developer who will use Claude Code daily → Start with Max ($100/month). If you’re still hitting limits, consider the $200 tier.
Running automated scripts or building on top of Claude Code → API billing through the Console.
Team of developers → Talk to Anthropic about Team or Enterprise plans.
Common Pricing Questions
Can I use Claude Code for free?
No. You need at least a Pro plan to authenticate. There is no free trial for Claude Code, though Anthropic occasionally runs promotions.
Does a subscription give me API access too?
No. Subscriptions (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) and API access are separate billing systems. A Pro subscription gives you Claude Code in your terminal and Claude.ai in your browser — not API tokens for building applications.
What happens when I hit my usage limit?
Claude Code will tell you that you’ve reached your limit and ask you to wait for the next reset period (typically around 5 hours). You can also enable usage credits on some plans to continue working beyond your included usage at additional cost.
Can I switch plans?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time through your Claude.ai account settings. Changes take effect at the next billing cycle.
Is the annual subscription worth it?
The Pro annual plan is $17/month ($200/year) versus $20/month billed monthly. That’s a $40/year saving — worth it if you’re confident you’ll use Claude Code long-term.
Key Takeaways
- Free plan = no Claude Code** — you need Pro minimum
- Pro ($20/month)** is the right starting point for most people
- Max ($100–$200/month)** is for daily heavy use where rate limits interrupt real work
- API billing** is separate from subscriptions and meant for programmatic, automated use
- One subscription covers both Claude.ai and Claude Code — no need to pay twice
