There’s a lot to learn — and that can feel overwhelming. This page cuts through it. Follow the four steps below in order and you’ll go from zero to a working daily workflow without getting lost.

Before Anything — Install Claude Code

You can’t learn it until it’s running. Pick your operating system and follow the guide — most people are up and running in under 10 minutes.

Step 1 — Understand What You’re Working With

Before you start throwing prompts at it, spend 20 minutes getting a mental model of how Claude Code actually works. What’s the agent loop? What’s a token? Why does it sometimes “forget” things? Once you understand the basics, everything else clicks much faster.

Step 2 — Set Up Your CLAUDE.md File

CLAUDE.md is the most important file you’ll create. It’s where you write your project rules — the things you’d otherwise have to explain to the AI at the start of every single session. Set it up once and it follows your rules automatically, forever. This is the highest-ROI hour you’ll spend with Claude Code.

Step 3 — Learn the Core Features in Order

Don’t try to learn everything at once. Work through these features one at a time. Each one builds on the last. By the end you’ll have a complete toolkit for handling almost any coding task.

Slash Commands & Skills

Create shortcuts for prompts you use over and over. Instead of typing the same 50-word instruction every time, you type /my-command and it fires automatically. Skills take this further — they’re full how-to guides the AI follows for specific tasks.

 Hooks

Automate quality checks and safety rules that fire at exactly the right moment — without you having to remember. A hook can run your linter after every file save, block dangerous commands before they execute, or run your test suite before the AI declares a task done.

Subagents

Delegate parts of a big task to parallel AI helpers. Instead of the AI working through a large codebase sequentially, it can spin up multiple helpers and tackle different sections at the same time. The secret to handling large projects fast.

MCP (Model Context Protocol)

Connect Claude Code to GitHub, Slack, databases, Notion, and hundreds of other tools. Once you add an MCP server for a service, the AI can interact with it directly — no copy-pasting, no browser switching.

Step 4 — Apply It to Real Work

Theory only takes you so far. These workflow guides show you how to apply everything you’ve learned to the kinds of tasks real developers face every day.
